Variations for Jamaican Banana Fritters
One of the best things about Jamaican Banana Fritters is their flexibility. You can easily modify the recipe to suit your preferences, change up the flavors, or add your own twist. Here are some fun alternatives to help you customize the fritters for different tastes and occasions.
- Use Whole Wheat Flour: For a heartier, more nutritious option, swap out the all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour. It will add a slightly nutty flavor and increase the fiber.
- Control the Sugar: Reduce the amount of sugar in the batter or leave it out altogether. You can sweeten the fritters after frying, which gives you more control over the sweetness.
- Other Liquids: When mixing the batter, use any milk option for more richness. The use of fruit juices (like orange or pineapple) will also enhance the flavor. Nonetheless, water works just fine too, feel free to use what you have on hand!
- Use Coconut Oil: For a healthier frying option, try using coconut oil instead of vegetable oil. Not only does it add a subtle tropical flavor, but it’s also a good source of healthy fats.
There you have it; delicious, golden, and crispy Jamaican Banana Fritters ready to brighten up your day! Whether you’re looking for a fun breakfast, a satisfying snack, or a sweet dessert, these fritters are sure to hit the spot. Jamaican Banana Fritters
Ingredients
- 3 bananas very ripe
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup milk of choice or water
- vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
Mash the Bananas
- Peel ripe bananas and place them in a large bowl.
- Mash them with a fork until smooth.
Add Remaining Ingredients
- To the mashed bananas, add the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and sugar.
- Stir to combine.
- Gradually add milk, a little at a time, until the batter reaches a thick consistency. The batter should hold its shape when dropped into the oil.
Heat the Oil
- In a frying pan, heat enough oil over medium heat to cover the bottom of the pan.
- Test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small spoonful of the batter into the oil. If it sizzles immediately, the oil is ready.
Fry the Fritters
- Using a spoon or ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil.
- Fry each fritter for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Avoid overcrowding the pan so each fritter has enough space to fry evenly.
- Once fried, remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Serve
- Serve your fritters warm as a breakfast treat, snack, or dessert.
- Drizzle with honey or maple syrup, or serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream for an extra treat.
